PHOTO OF THE WEEK IMAGES FOR AUGUST, 2012

Description: Description: chama_river_overlook

August 6th, 2012 – Chama River Overlook

I have taken quite a few shots from this vantage point over the past 6 years. Each time the scene is different. It can range from a crystal clear sky to angry
black clouds. The vegetation coverage and color of the leaves change based on the season and time of year. The color of the water can range from dull white
to adobe orange occasionally reflecting the ultra-blue sky color.  As with many locations in New Mexico, each time you see a place can be like seeing it for the
first time all over again. I took this image on a very stormy day, in fact with just minutes before a torrential downpour started. I clicked off 3 separate images
for a panorama shot. I feel this image did capture the mood of the day and the beauty of the overlook. This location is along US Highway 84 between Abiquiu &
Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, approximately 4.6 miles west of the Bode’s Store in Abiquiu, NM. The USGS (GPS) coordinates are Latitude 36°14’, Longitude 106°23’.
The river is the Rio Chama which is a tributary of the Rio Grande River.

August 13th, 2012 - Blacksmith

I found this blacksmith shop at the Kit Carson Living History Museum in Rayado, New Mexico. The museum is located on the expansive Philmont Boy
Scout Ranch, south of Cimarron on State Highway 21 approximately 11 miles. The volunteers all dress in period clothing and offer
recreations of the 1850’s. The USGS (GPS) coordinates are Latitude 36°22’, Longitude 104°56’. The days and hours of operation for the
museum are: June 10 to August 25, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Check out museum information at: http://www.santafetrailnm.org/site71.html

Description: Description: ocate_church

August 20th, 2012 – Ocate Church

Ocate, New Mexico consists of one commercial building, some remains of past enterprises, a couple of churches, and some small ranch buildings
and homes. Guaranteed you will see more cows than people. Normally, if you are in Ocate you are either lost or on your way to another local.
One thing for certain, you will see some amazing skies here. The blue sky and white clouds will almost hurt your eyes they are so vibrant. I know,
this image is Black & White, but the contrast show up so well in that medium, I rarely print an Ocate image in color. This church location is
approximately ½ mile west of the intersection of State Highways 120 and 442. The USGS (GPS) coordinates are Latitude 36°10’, Longitude 105°03’.

August 27th, 2012 – Black Mesa Moonrise

This is my “ode” to Ansel Adams and his famous “Moonrise Hernandez” image. That image is one of my all-time favorites and the story behind
its creation is just as fascinating. But for my image, I planned on this time and location quite a few days ahead of time and using my trusty smart phone app “Sun Surveyor”
I knew way ahead of time where the moon would rise and at the approximate time. So, unlike the spontaneous and frantic actions of Ansel, I was able to calmly
capture what I had planned many days before, thanks in part to 21st century technology. This image was taken west of Black Mesa in the San Ildefonso Pueblo,
approximately 5 miles south of Espanola, New Mexico on State Highway 30. You can see the chapel from the highway. There is an easy pull-out to
park right off of the road. The USGS (GPS) coordinates are Latitude 35°56’, Longitude 106°07’.
